Tuesdays with TMAC – Merced Up Next On Friday!

(Bill W) March 26, 2013 – The Country Builders Construction #88 and driver Terry McCarl will be back at it with the World of Outlaws this Friday night at the Merced Speedway in California. It follows a pair of events in Stockton and Chico last weekend that saw a mechanical issue surface.

Stockton 99 Dirt Track was a new venue for the World of Outlaws on Friday. It went over very well. “It was so awesome to see a sold out event,” says TMAC. “I’m a promoter at heart too. It shows you how strong the racing in California can be. There is a lot of history out here.”

The Altoona, Iowa driver enjoys returning to California to race. “I drove for Country Builders in the early ‘90’s, and it’s so neat coming out here,” he says. “It’s a beautiful car and they are family to me. Weldon (Offill) and his family were able to meet up with some old friends…it was just a great event. Those are the events you want to do well at.”

After qualifying seventh, TMAC suffered some mechanical gremlins. “We were just off from the word ‘go’,” he says. “We had a problem with the car. I’ve finally found out what the problem was. We had a bar behind the seat hitting the rear-end. I knew it was bound up; I just didn’t know what it was. Anyone who knows that is happening, knows you might as well have radius rods on the back of the car instead of shocks.”

TMAC did get through his heat (fourth), but suffered a DNF at Stockton. “We did a good job for such a big event just to make the show with the problems we had,” he says. “The car just felt so bad in the feature. It was the same thing at Chico. We went out late (to qualify 34th), but that didn’t have as big an impact as the handling of the car.”

The car got a little better, but the qualifying hole proved too tough to dig out of. “I felt pretty good the rest of the night,” says TMAC. “We started ninth in the heat and got by Joey and a couple of guys. We had a decent setup when the track was heavy. We ran second in the C. We started in the back of the B and the car felt really good. I think we had a shot at making it out, but I pulled off. I thought something was wrong with the steering.”

The #88 should be primed and ready for Merced on Friday. “I’m taking the car to Rod Tiner Thursday and have him cut the bar out and put where it’s supposed to be,” says TMAC. “We were able to break the track record at Merced last year before Kraig Kinser came back and beat it late. We ended up second quick and tenth in the feature. It’s a fun little joint. It’s just great to be out here in California, and the weather is nice!”

Son Carson will be running in California as well on Friday, but at the Ocean Speedway in Watsonville. “Unfortunately, Carson will be racing the same night as us in Watsonville,” says TMAC. “He’ll be in Craig Smith’s backup car. Lori will be in town to hang out with him. He needs some laps. It was important for me at one time to come race these bullrings in California. I want him to have the same experience out here too. It would be nice to see him get some sponsorship and add some shows to his schedule out here.”

This Month in TMAC History!

TMAC was victorious on March 30, 1991 in weekly action at the San Jose Fairgrounds. Driving the Offill #88, he topped Danny Olmstead, Tim Green, John Golobic and Rick Martin. He raced on a weekly basis in both 1990 and 1991 before hitting the WoO trail as a rookie with Offill in 1992. “San Jose was a real racy 3/8,” says TMAC. “It was a great track. I had a great time racing with the Offills’ back then.”
