Tuesdays with TMAC – Spring Outlaw Swing a Success!
(Bill W) April 1, 2014 – Terry McCarl is back home in Altoona, Iowa after early season success running with the World of Outlaws. He capped a west coast trip in California with a ninth place finish last Friday night at Merced Speedway. With the WoO this year, TMAC has qualified for every main event through his heat race, and registered two top fives and five top tens in the nine shows he has competed in.
TMAC missed one show in Tucson, but has made the rest and is currently shown twelfth in series’ points. “It was important for me to stay in Vegas with a sponsor (for the Tucson race), but had we made the trip, we would solidly be in the top ten,” he says. “It was just a good trip out there. DJ Brink was a tremendous help. He’s a good, hard worker. It was just DJ and I with one car and one motor.”
At Merced, TMAC timed in well. “Tenth quick was great,” he says. “We were right in the hunt. We’ve been there all year. Our Rider engine is really good, and that was the twelfth night on it. I think we have a handle on our A.R.T. chassis and it’s rolling around there really well.”
Tenth quick meant a heat starting position on the outside of row one. A new WoO rule implemented starting at Merced locks just the winner of the heat in the Dash, rather than the top two. “The position that I’m in, I don’t agree with the new rule,” says TMAC. “Every driver is going to judge a rule by the way it affects them though. They don’t always look at the big picture. It definitely hurt us at Merced. Though we set fast time at Tulare, I haven’t been in that position much this year. Games are going to be played on the start of the heat race. It is a cat and mouse game. Maybe it will add some excitement to the event, who knows?”
Sammy Swindell got the jump on the heat race field from his pole position and went on to win the heat. “(The rule) definitely puts a lot more emphasis on the start of the race,” says TMAC. “I think the officials may regret that. Sammy did a great job on the start and got away with it. By the time I got to the white (start) line, I was tucked in behind him on the bottom. That’s how bad it was. Again, Sammy did it and got away with it, so I’m not mad at him. He did what he had to do.”
TMAC would finish second. “Our car really takes off well on starts, but we had no chance (to win) at that point,” he says. “We were turning great laps though, and we pulled away from third by about a straightaway. We were turning the same laps as Sammy, which was great.”
Lining up thirteenth to start the main event, TMAC was complimentary of the track prep at the tiny bullring. “They had the track really good. The past couple of years there’s been very little passing at Merced and we all rode around the bottom. It’s the smallest track we run on.”
A ninth place finish was the result at the checkers. A rainout in Chico on Saturday night put an end to the west coast trip for the Country Builders Construction #88. “I was able to get to eleventh, and then Rico (Abreu) got by me,” says TMAC. “I went to the top from there and started passing guys. There was a good battle and I got by (Daryn) Pittman awhile for eighth. I almost drove over the edge of three and four, but we were able to come back and finish ninth. It was a solid night.”
