Tuesdays with TMAC – Great West Coast Swing Comes to an End!
(Bill W) March 31, 2015 – Terry McCarl and the TMAC Motorsports team are stoked after a west coast trip saw them garner a win, three top five finishes and six top tens with the World of Outlaws. The Altoona, Iowa driver is headed home now to prepare for the National Sprint League opener on April 11 at 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa.
For having one engine on hand, TMAC was happy about the performance of the team out west. “It’s been a great west coast swing,” he says. “We were able to get a win (in Las Vegas) and three top five finishes. We were able to get six top tens after we left Iowa. After ten Outlaw events, we had led the most laps. That was pretty cool.”
The Outlaws visited Tulare, California on March 13 and 14. TMAC has won with the Outlaws there in the past and has a good track record. In the feature on the 13th, he would move his way forward. “We were really fast,” he says. “We started fifth. Joey (Saldana) led early and we were able to get out front. We led a lot of the way. We started getting loose at the end. I was sliding in three and four. I kept pulling on the wing and pulling on the wing. I slid up and hooked the cushion and Tim Kaeding got by me there. Shane (Stewart) and I battled it out the last few laps to the checkers. We ended up third. I looked up and the wing hadn’t moved. The wing cylinder or something was bent. Anyway, we had a lot of fun.”
The next night would see another top ten run. “We had to start back a ways (11th),” says TMAC. “We got caught back there a little bit. Some guys were battling for position in front of us. We were really fast. Once we got cleared, we were able to run down Joey, Paul (McMahan) and Daryn (Pittman). At the end it laid rubber, and we ended up seventh. It was a good run again on a demanding racetrack in Tulare.”
Another two-night event commenced March 21 and 22 in Stockton, California. “We had a bit of a tough night the first night in Stockton,” says TMAC. “We loosened the car up quite a bit and came out and were fourth quick on Sunday. We were able to make it through the heat and finish second to Daryn in the Dash.”
Starting up front, TMAC led the majority of the feature before finishing second. “We had a really good car,” he says of the Country Builders #88. “Going back, there isn’t much we would change. The track was good in one and two, and laid a little bit of rubber in three and four. We fended off a lot of people. We had some good battles with Brad (Sweet), Jason Johnson and Daryn in the beginning. I kind of got into three and four too short one time and had to lock them up. Rico (Abreu) was able to catch me. I went to the bottom of one and two like I had earlier, and the track was just better on the outside. Rico had a great car, and so did we. Weldon Offill and the whole family were there, so it was good to have the Country Builders #88 out front again. It was fun even though we ran second.”
Last Saturday night was the mini-Gold Cup at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico. “We were really good in the heat at Chico,” says TMAC. “I kind of had a bad start in the heat, but we were battling for third after two laps. We had a great racecar. The red came out and we got ran into. We bent a draglink and had to go to the back. We restarted tenth and we were passing for second when the yellow came out again. I really think we would have won the heat without that. We ended up second. It laid rubber in the feature, so I pulled off and saved the engine. That was our 13th night on the engine. We had some pretty strong runs, and we’re ready for some NSL action back in the Midwest.”
The National Sprint League’s inaugural event will be held on Saturday April 11 at the 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa.

This Month in TMAC History!
In 2001 at Sedalia’s State Fair Speedway in Missouri, TMAC finished fourth with the World of Outlaws, driving the Holbrook #8h. Paul McMahan won the event in Warren Johnson’s #U2 ahead of Craig Dollansky and Mark Kinser. Joey Saldana was fifth. TMAC went back to the #24 in April and reeled off 22 wins that season including the Danny Young Memorial at the Iowa State Fair Speedway, the 360 Nationals at Knoxville, and during NCRA Speedweek at the Salina Highbanks Speedway.
