Late Pass Nets Jerry Richert Memorial Win for Terry McCarl!
by Bill Wright

Knoxville, IA, September 12, 2015 – Terry McCarl passed Brian Brown in lapped traffic late in the feature Saturday night to win his third career Jerry Richert Memorial at the Cedar Lake Speedway near New Richmond, Wisconsin. Thanks to bonus money, the Altoona, Iowa driver netted $3,500 aboard the TMAC Motorsports #24 in the event that was sanctioned by the FVP National Sprint League and the Bumper to Bumper IRA Sprint Series.

Brown took the lead at the drop of the green, while McCarl found his way around Tim Kaeding from row two to take second. Four laps in, the only caution of the 30-lap main event came when Tasker Phillips spun in turn one.

The restart saw Brown ahead of McCarl, Kaeding, Bronson Maeschen and Bill Balog. Ian Madsen shot under Danny Lasoski to take sixth on the restart. Maeschen shot by Kaeding for third on lap six. The lead trio headed into lapped traffic shortly after, with Kaeding pressuring Maeschen to recover the third spot.

The track saw multiple grooves, and McCarl primarily worked the low line in three and four and the high side in one and two. On lap 22, in heavy traffic, McCarl slipped by Brown on the low side to take the lead. On the ensuing lap, Brown slid back by, but by the time the pair returned to the flagstand, McCarl had retained his advantage.

McCarl would pull away for his third NSL win of the season ahead of Brown, Maeschen, Kaeding and Balog. Lasoski, Madsen, Craig Dollansky, Bryan Clauson and Lynton Jeffrey rounded out the top ten. Balog set quick time over the field, while Steve Meyer, Blake Nimee, Jeffrey and Dollansky won heat races. Phillips won the B.

“This is one of my favorite racetracks,” said McCarl in Victory Lane. “They had it in great shape and made it perfect. We could run anywhere at the end. Brian was out in front and I had a little advantage on him. We had a good racecar. We had to wait for traffic and be patient. I saw Jerry Richert Sr. race a lot when I was a kid. He was an amazing race car driver, a champion, and tough as nails. His son Jerry was a rival of mine for a long time, and a great racer. They are a racing family like the McCarl’s. They live and breathe it. I just have a lot of respect for them.”

“It was a good weekend for us,” said Brown. “We ran well last night and tonight. Sometimes you just get beat. Once he got by me, I didn’t think he was night and day better than us. He was a little more maneuverable in traffic. It feels like we’re back where we should be. This is an awesome event. I appreciate what the Richert family and the Tatnell family do for this race.”

“We’ve been having some bad luck, so just to get to mix with those guys and race felt well,” said Maeschen. “I did try and be patient. With the year we’ve had, we’re pretty happy to be up here on the podium. We’re working on some marketing partners and we hope to get off the porch a little more next year.”
The FVP National Sprint League finishes up their inaugural season October 2 and 3 with its “Fearless 410 Finale” at the I-80 Speedway near Greenwood, Nebraska. For more information on the FVP National Sprint League, visit www.NationalSprintLeague.com!
